John Deere 730 ES 24 volt charging system

I have a JD 730 ES. It has a 1 wire altenator on it but isn't charging. Are these charging systems as complicated as I read on the internet? Thanks Gary

One wire alternators have built in regulators and are internalwire for the senseing lead wire, the wire that tells the regulator to charge. the battery must be good for the alt. to charge, you can short the regulator use a small screwdriver in the "D" shaped hole on the back side of alt. RPM at 1000 volt meter shonld be 14 volt of regulator is bad and alt is good. if you just get battery voltage the alt is bad.

You probably need to have your alternator checked
by your local repair shop. May have a blown diode
and if it has an internal regulator it may be defective. Hal

the 730 came from the factory with a 24 volt charging and starting system, but the lights and dash lights etc.were 12 volt.are the batteries wired 12 or 24 and is the alt 12 or 24 volt.the 730 could not just be changed and expect the resr of the electrical to be stock

They are not complicated to somebody with a diagram, a multimeter and a basic knowledge of electricity.
Is the starter 24V or 12V. It is not a 12V run/24V start system as in some highway tractors which charge with a 12V alternator. The Deere 12/24V system uses a 24V charging system.
What happened to the factory 24V generator? They do a good enough job as along as somebody doesn't start and stop the tractor twice to drive it through a gate.

I got a generator with the tractor, that was not on it when I got it about a yr. ago. I need to check and see if the generator is 12 volt or 24 volt. I know the 730 Es came with a generator and would rather go original, but I want to get it charging with the altenator and use it. It has the two-12 volt batteries on it and they charge up fine with a battery charger. The two batteries are wired in series with the ground in the middle to get 12 volts for lights. Thank you for the info- Gary

Yes, and if you are still 24 volt with one batteries positive and one batteries neg. connected to the frame, you will need TWO alternators. One charging 12 positive and one charging 12 negative. It would be best to convert to a later 12 volt starter and use a 3 wire alternator because the one wires do not work well in slow speed equipment.

You can get 24 Volt alternators that have the guts isolated from the case, just as the original generator was set up, thereby keeping the split 24 Volt system just like it was with the generator.
