Mowed township ditches for years with an Oliver 550 and a MF dynabalance sickle mower with 6" road bar. Never took tractor off the road without first walking the ditch to look for washes etc.. Never let mower down on skids as they wouldn"t last 2 hours draging on gravel. Could mow around 5 mph and do a good job on most roads. I could watch ahead of mower for trees,stumps and other obstructions. I"d miss one once in a while but the breakaway would trip without damage to the mower. I have a 9" disc mower for hay but would never use it to mow roads. Its just not designed for it and the cost if I broke it would hurt.
