First of all, if operating the tractor there makes you nervous, it's probably NOT a good idea to be there. Do you have ROPS and a seatbelt, if not, think twice about what you are doing. As much as you want that stuff mowed, it's not worth losing your life over!
If the mower has a float spring, setting up the tension will help it glide over obstacles.
A pitmanless mower can operate at up or down angles without wrecking the pitman. I use a 9' unit, which makes it easier to keep the tractor in a more safe location, away from the ditch.
They DO make offset rotary cutters for mowing ditchbanks, but LOTS of $$$$, of course.
