I know with the old German diesel engines in my 756 and 826 if you check the oil you do it before you start it when it's stone cold or it'll look so low you feel guilty running it. Oil pump throws all that oil up in the top of the block. My guess is you checked it after runing it and it was low. Then you added and the oil level was high enough the crankshaft threw it around. I was taught that makes the oil foam and you could be looking at engine damage.
