Farmall M diesel

I changed oil in the engine and had it right on the mark. Then ran for about 8 hours and was 1.5 qt low. Added and ran another 8 hours and then was way over the full mark. Dropped the oil because this all seemed odd to me .Sent in an oil sample and it says engine oil has a critical level of diesel fuel in it. What the heck is going on here. Low one day then over full the next. Any ideas? Thanks

the second oil-filling time-did you tighten anything up??? Oil drain mabey??? Perhaps you lost some of the first filling through there, the filter base, or anywhere else. Did you look for leaks.

I know with the old German diesel engines in my 756 and 826 if you check the oil you do it before you start it when it's stone cold or it'll look so low you feel guilty running it. Oil pump throws all that oil up in the top of the block. My guess is you checked it after runing it and it was low. Then you added and the oil level was high enough the crankshaft threw it around. I was taught that makes the oil foam and you could be looking at engine damage.

If you checked the oil immediately after shutting it off, there was probably still a lot of oil in the upper part of the engine. Need to wait a while for it all to drain down.

Diesel in the oil and the oil level rising are good indications of a leaky injection pump. The pump on my WD-6 (same engine as an MD) has its own oil sump. Apparently these pumps are known for leaking between the primary pump and the injection pump sections, resulting in diesel in the injection pump sump. I suppose if the sump in the injection pump got full enough it could leak into the crankcase??? Something to check.

Was the tractor parked on level ground when you checked the oil? Check the oil after about 5 minutes after running so that all the oil returns to the oil pan or you will not get a accurate reading of how much oil is in the oil pan.

bad fuel pump seal in your injection pump.

the fuel pump on the backside of your injection pump is driven by a shaft coming from the pump, when the seal there goes bad it leaks fuel into the oil sump on the bottom of the pump, when this overfills, it flows out the front seal of the pump and drops down into the oil pan over filling the oil. just replace fuel pump seal and you'll be fine. No need to remove the injection pump. just disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump and unbolt the fuel pump from the injection pump, replace the seal and put it back together.

When changing oil in my isuzu I always overfill it and have to drain some off because of the time lag for the oil to reach the sump. TV reruns don't bother me as much these days either.
