Actually, there are some dumb questions but yours isn't one of them. It's a great question. Radiator shutters are obviously used to get the engine to operating temperature more quickly and also to keep it higher if you wish. Some were thermostatically controlled but most were manually done with a lever or cable, etc. Tractors that ran distillate fuel had to operate at a higher temperature to vaporize the distillate more efficiently (since distillate was a lower grade fuel than gasoline). These days, I would think that most tractors just use the engine thermostat but I'm not sure on that.
