Thats a pretty good explaination of a simple system but there are many applicatins where a gear type positive displacment pump is used with closed center control valves. In this case an unloader valve is used between the pump and control valves. There may also be flow dividers and in some cases flow integrators where more than one pump is used to increase hydraulic flow.
