As to coming to this area, within an hours radius you can get the KY Horse Park, Bourbon Trail, Bluegrass horse farms, L'vill Slugger, and lots of museums and such in L'ville, Lexington, and Cincinatti. Add a half hour and you an get Mamouth Cave.
As to what I like, for family we strictly do long weekend trips and such. Myrtle Beach in September is nice, I love to put theme trip together around Civil War Battlefields, museum trips, D.C. is actually a cool long weekend. I love a driving trip down through California, fly into Vegas spend a couple of nights, then rent a car or van, and make a big loop taking in a couple of days in LA, and a couple in San Fran, then back to Vegas. Usually spend a day in the Napa Valley, or two. Take the back roads through ranch country and just stop and visit.
