O/T Vacation Destinations

This is way off topic but I need some help. The women in our household say that we (men) are boring and need to do something exciting. They then asked us to come up with something exciting to do. That is where you all come in. Could you please list some vacation destinations and area attractions Thanks. Anywhere in the U.S.

Go to The Great Wolf Lodge, there are several in the US. It is an indoor water park. (Kids love it)
If it is your wife that is complaining then tell her that it is like a vacation for you being married to her. And that staying home is great with gas prices being so high.

We have been going to north central MD the last few years because that is where my grandkids live. We pick them (granddaughters) up and we are off. The parents get a vacation from the kids and we get some alone time with the grandkids.

Last year we went to Gettysburg; Lancaster and Hershey PA. Very pretty country and we all had fun.
This year my son has rented a cabin for us in eastern MD since it is my 25 anniversary. The wife and kids get some time in the outdoors and I get to go fishing in the Chesapeake bay.
Do not know how much fun it will be but it does sound good.

You really need to tell us what you like to do for us to comment or recommend. Some love the crowds and big amusement parks while others like to get away in the country.

I think you should go into Azeroth and kill boars! It will be a fun family activity that everyone can enjoy.

Well I'm really open to all suggestions, the kids range in age from 13-20 and then two parents. We live in Western, Pa but are open to travel.

Someday, I'm going to take about a week and do nothing but poke around in the San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado. I'd also like to spend time in Utah and New Mexico. When I was in the Marine Corps, I spent a year on temporary duty on an Army base near Albuquerque, just long enough to develop a love for that kind of country.

The only problem is, our daughter lives in Washington DC and whenever we head out it's always to the east. However, if you're into our country's history, there's always something new to see in the DC area.

Great Topic. Being from Wis., the folks here would want you to "discover" Wisconsin.
One has to be a bit careful about WHEN to travel- like Salt Lake City is an interesting place to visit (mountains, canyons, etc.), but is very warm in Summer. Salt Lake has a good Farmers' Market (Pioneer Park); Sept. & Oct. good time for that.
Yellowstone Natl. Park (IMHO) is a place everyone should get to visit once in a lifetime. Keep one eye on the weather there, too! Mark SW Wis.

So where are you going that hey (women folk) think is boring? If you cn take the heat, Charleston SC is very nice this time of the year. Scenic beauty and shopping for the women folk, history for the men, the Battery in the evening, man I wish I could just move down there.

anywhere in the mountains should be great in hot weather, unless you already live there. Then its the seashore.

As to coming to this area, within an hours radius you can get the KY Horse Park, Bourbon Trail, Bluegrass horse farms, L'vill Slugger, and lots of museums and such in L'ville, Lexington, and Cincinatti. Add a half hour and you an get Mamouth Cave.

As to what I like, for family we strictly do long weekend trips and such. Myrtle Beach in September is nice, I love to put theme trip together around Civil War Battlefields, museum trips, D.C. is actually a cool long weekend. I love a driving trip down through California, fly into Vegas spend a couple of nights, then rent a car or van, and make a big loop taking in a couple of days in LA, and a couple in San Fran, then back to Vegas. Usually spend a day in the Napa Valley, or two. Take the back roads through ranch country and just stop and visit.

I enjoy vacationing anywhere in the US just as long as the old lady doesn't go along. That way I can do what I want and see what I want. I usually bring a friend along that isn't so judgemental and picky and she doesn't mind just going wherever I want to go.

Omaha just had the College World Series-signed a long term contract, so will be again next year. Also, just finishing up the Olympic Swim trials. Henry Doorly Zoo is world renown. We also have the SAC-Air Force-museum-VERY nice! Several museums along-or just off of-I80 as you are heading to the Rockies! Greg

Depends on what the kids are interested in. They're old enough to appreciate more than water parks. I agree that Yellowstone is something that everyone should experience. Drive in or out over the Beartooth Pass. Washington, D.C. has so much history. If your bored with statues, you can spend days in the Air & Space museum.

been a long time since I was there, but I'd have to say Branson , Mo. Or hit Florida. Kissimmee has something for everyone within a short distance. Tastes vary though. Just pick something, you ain't gonna please them anyway.

Good Luck,

Dave

Our favorite is the Outter Banks of North Carolina- anywhere from Duck to Buxton to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Bring your 4WD truck and drive on some of the last wild beaches on the east coast....see where the Wright Bros flew...fish...kick back! Grab a few beers at the Weaping Radish or Awful Arthurs!

Hello Gerald len here in michigan i make 4-8 trips north into Ontario for fishing each year--probABLY GOING TO BE A FEW LESS WITH THE PRICE OF PETRO. Have wondered about the trip into Churchill by train--would a guy leave from Thompson???? Have you made the trip. Know of a group who made the trip by river canoe last spring--very interesting read.
Any info would be appreciated.

I would have to say Colorado Springs. In a weeks time you will still not see all there is to see around there. Lots of attractions for example, Pike's Peak, Royal Gorge, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, Cave of the Winds, and the Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame just to name a few. The temp is usually fairly mild in the summer, it does get hot but you can always go to a higher elevation.

I don't get out much but I spent 4 days in Washington DC last March and it's something every American citizen should experience at least once. In DC most of the stuff is free to see and it's close enough you can walk or take the Metro anywhere you need to go except for Mt. Vernon which requires a bus ride. I don't think a trip to DC would be for young kids because the importance of what they are seeing wouldn't sink in but it's a great experience.

Did a 4,143 mile 8 state road trip with my Daughter the first part of June. Saw the Black Hills, Devils Tower, Moab UT, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and every thing in between SE Az and SE MT. Turned around a week later and flew back to Montana to bury my 91 year old Dad so I have a little ove 7K miles behind me this summer already.

So take your choice Left Coast, Right Coast, Mountain States, Heartland, Dixie as the man said in the song. "This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land" and it's the greatest place in the World I don't care where you go.

It would help a bit to know your tastes and budget. There Is just a huge variety of places to go in this country.

If you don't mind cities, I highly recommend Washington, DC. You could spend two weeks there and not see everything there is to see. You could easily spend a week in the various Smithsonian museums alone. If you go there in the summer, try to see the Friday night parade at the Marine Corps Barracks, it is one of my favorite memories of DC. (You need to get there early if you don't have reservations.)

If you're looking for something less urban, consider a trip through California. You can visit the beach, the mountains and the desert in one trip. And even though LA and San Francisco are both insane, there is a lot to see and do in either city. The wine country of Napa and Santa Barbara is also popular. The biggest problem with a trip to CA is deciding what you're going to miss. The sheer size of the state dictates that you can only see a small fraction of it in one trip.

I love the North Carolina Outer Banks, but they're not everybody's cup of tea. They are quite remote, and taking a side trip means a long drive down a two-lane highway or possibly a ferry. If you go in the summer, you'll want to try to reserve a cottage; in the fall and winter the beaches will be deserted and you'll have them to yourselves.

Everyone should see Yellowstone before they die. 'nuff said.

The Colorado Rockies are a great trip, there are many spectacular drives you can take.

My wife and I took and Alaska cruise last year. We had a great time and plan to return to Alaska in the future.

I agree on the Outer Banks, OBX is a great place to go. If you are going in a $X$, and plan to tide the beach, carry a few shovels as well as a compressed air source to re-air tires after deflating them for the sand..

Oops, Several mistakes.. I meant 4X4 instead of $X$, although the dollar signs might be right, at today's fuel prices, Also, I meant Ride, instead of Tide, LOL..

My two favorite vacations: White water rafting the Royal Gorge in Canon City, CO & if no kids, Negril, Jamaica. You can do a couples resort. It's not X rated. It's geared towards couples doing things together without having to worry about kids. Kinda like returning to when you were dating.

$X$ really is a better description. I think you just started something. Better copywrite it.!

i need those '$x$' decals for the side of my 2500...far more appropriate than the "4x4"...
think we could get 'em made up?

If you are going to DC, plan on staying south in VA, around Springfield, VA. Safer, cleaner, cheaper and you can take the Metro anywhere you want to go into DC. Spend the evening in Old Town Alexandria visiting colonial stuff and pub crawling, plan on visiting Mt Vernon (washington's plantation), then spend a day in Fredricksburg visiting Civil War sites and ferry Farm, washington's boy hood home.
I see this stuff every day, so I'm kind of jaded- but I can defintely tell you the best/least expensive way to do this area.
Other stuff in the DC area by metro- Air/ Space Museum, NRA museum, Smithsonian of course, the new Marine Corp Museum. And...memory lane farm, home of world champion appaloosas! Holla at us if you're in the area!

o.k. on vacations have any of you westerns rode an old train in Colorado From LaVeta to Alamosa.
Comming west this fall and thought that might make a good day trip. Anything else you can think
of. Will be staying in Col., New Mexico, Arizona,
coupe of weeks. Thanks Jerry
