There are a couple of things that make no sense to buy as a "homeowner grade": stump grinders and wood chippers. As hard of work as it is to use the commercial grade items, I wouldn't even consider anything less.
You can rent a stump grinder over the weekend for a few hundred bucks and grind 30 or more big stumps. That works out pretty good on a per-stump basis.
If you're dead set on owning one of your own, I would look for a used commercial-grade grinder in fair condition.
