O/T: Any homeonwer-grade stump grinders out there?

I've been looking for a stump grinder to use around my place. I've got a bunch of weed trees, and some small pines I've cut down. Just enough that I figure I'd be better off buying one than renting.

Everything I've found so far is huge, expensive, commercial grade. Anyone got any suggestions, and an estimated price?

I have a neighbor that rented a large diesel Rayco stump grinder for the weekend. He ground up over 60 stumps of different sizes, the largest one was about 16". Most were 5-8" diameter.

What I did was cut off the stumps flush with the ground and then filled over with 3" of topsoil. How many stumps do you have? You could also go to a tree removal guy and say the magic word....Cash! and a case of beer for stump grinding.

A couple of dealers got back to me today. Sounds like I'm looking at at least $2000. I was hoping to find something more along the lines of 5-600 bucks. I had no idea they were so expenisve, even for the little ones.

I found one used Husqvarna 272S for $350, but they only had the head unit and the blade, they didn't have the trolley that it rides on. I went and saw it run, but without that trolley, it looked like a good way to get my feet injured.

There you go blue- 6 month satisfaction guarantee or your money back. You get 'em done and you're not satisfied. Just kidding. Seems like people would take advantage of them.

$85 a day for a small walk-behind one. I think 1 full day could probably take care of most of the stumps I got.

I'd rather drill holes in the stumps after a year or so and pour diesel in them and burn them, than work that dang thing.

There are a couple of things that make no sense to buy as a "homeowner grade": stump grinders and wood chippers. As hard of work as it is to use the commercial grade items, I wouldn't even consider anything less.

You can rent a stump grinder over the weekend for a few hundred bucks and grind 30 or more big stumps. That works out pretty good on a per-stump basis.

If you're dead set on owning one of your own, I would look for a used commercial-grade grinder in fair condition.

A man here in town made stump grinder. He has a machine shop.He used the rear axle out a Ford truck.I am not sure what he used for wheel and knives. He said it works good.
