I scrapped 2 three ton loads this week in Lawrence, MA. The yard is essentially a transfer station with little space, less than half an acre. All the cast iron, prepared and unprepared no 1 and no 2 goes into the same pile. Their inventory is in and out on the same day. I think they ship to Boston or Portsmouth, NH. I would go to Boston but I heard the wait is 4+ hours. They are so busy they won't answer the phone to quote prices. It is just as well. The pier is in Everett, MA. The police have aggressive truck teams that could really wreck my day. Three tons on a one ton 4x4 diesel dump truck is way over specs.
In Lawrence:
No 1 and 2 prepared is $375/long ton (2240 lbs)
Light iron is $250/long ton
Cast iron is $350/long ton
I talked to a salvage yard the other day. The owner said he is getting more than $375 for crushed cars. He has his own press. He wouldn't tell me how much.
Alot is scrap iron from the US East Coast and Europe goes to Turkey. Their mills are paying $600-$700 per long ton. Google Alerts sends me world-wide quotes using keywords "scrap metal". Unfortunately, very few places in the US are willing to publish their prices.
