9N Engine Troubleshooting

Does anyone have a reason why my 9N would suddenly begin to smoke from the oil spout and dipstick? The engine began to rattle at the same time, and I believe there is some contamination in the oil. My guess is the head gasket blew, I noticed a slight reduction in compression, but no overheating. Any guess's?
