6 volt vs. 12 volt system

I have a 1948 8N that I believe needs a new or rebuilt generator. I'm not sure how long a battery will last without the gen. working but I have been through two batteries in the last two years. My volt meter seems to stay a little left of center (-)while in operation but my battery is lasting all summer. I've been toying with converting to a 12 volt system but am not sure. Are there any disadvanteges to making this conversion? And how expensive is it to convert? Please help !!
