Done haying by the 4th of July? I need to move west a ways! When I was a kid and grandad was in charge, we'd wait 'till the 5th of July to start haying. Usually got done by the first of September. And we'd quit at 6PM sharp every day and no haying on Sundays.
Nowadays, we start mowing about the third week of June and go straight through, dawn till dark, seven days a week(weather permitting) 'till about the last week of September. Of course, now, we put up hay for a few neighbors too, plus we've added more land of our own. The hay we put up last summer was seven separate ranches in 1971, now it's four(three actually since we lease one of 'em).
Back then the hay crew was about 6 or 7 guys, now it's dad, my brother, myself, and usually one extra.
Funny how modern "labor and time saving" equipment has somehow resulted in less free time! But as long as things aren't broken down, that A/C is pretty nice- during those hot summer days there's not many better places to be...
