If you ever see the Book of International Harvester by C.H. Wendel and there is a picture of an IH crawler going out of Hudson, Ontario across Lac Seul pulling a sled train , there is a good chance the tractor driver was my Dad. He worked for Ontario Hydro and things got slack in the winter, he would drive for Starrat for extra dough. No roofs on the "cabs" (think Heat Houser), so the drivers could jump when the tractors went through the ice. Winter of 1936-37. Before that, it was teams of horses across the ice or a Hudson Bay boat in summer and lug everything across the portages.
