I have a 3,300 sq ft house in south NH that I heated this last winter with about 450 gal of oil and about 2,250 lbs of coal. The oil also heats my hot water.The coal cost $7.00 per 50 lb. bag. I burn pea coal which is in pieces approx 1/2 by 1 inch. The coal goes in a hopper and self feeds down onto the grate. You have to knife it at least 2x a day to make the ash drop down into the pans below the grate. I put in some replacement windows last fall which seemed to make a significant difference. I also sent the wife out to work so the temp is down to about 62 almost 24 hours a day ,except for the room where the coal stove is which we get up to 68- 72 when we are in there.
