OT: What does coal cost?

Anybody heat with coal? What does it cost per ton? Does anybody have a coal stove/coal pellet burner setup? I have read that Propain will cost over $2.50 per gallon this winter.

I have a Harmon boiler that will do wood or coal. I burn nut coal. $180 a ton, 3 ton min, $30 or $40 del. fee. I'm 30 mile from the coal dealer in PA. My friends burn rice coal in several kinds of stove and furnaces. I had a Keystoker myself. Loved it, was built like a tank. I think one of my friends is going to by a new Keystoker hot air furnace. I don't think you can beat hard coal BTUs per dollar. I think the Harmon site has a link to compare fuel cost per BTU if not I'll find it and post link.

I have a 3,300 sq ft house in south NH that I heated this last winter with about 450 gal of oil and about 2,250 lbs of coal. The oil also heats my hot water. The coal cost $7.00 per 50 lb. bag. I burn pea coal which is in pieces approx 1/2 by 1 inch. The coal goes in a hopper and self feeds down onto the grate. You have to knife it at least 2x a day to make the ash drop down into the pans below the grate. I put in some replacement windows last fall which seemed to make a significant difference. I also sent the wife out to work so the temp is down to about 62 almost 24 hours a day ,except for the room where the coal stove is which we get up to 68- 72 when we are in there.

I remember researching it once but I can't even remember now where to look. I remember that it was a much better buy than seasoned firewood.

I heat with rice coal. Currently 140.00 a ton. Deep mined coal.
My brother in law and myself go get a truck load [18 ton ] and split it.

#2 steam coal has been running about 100 a ton at the tipple, metallurgical coal about 245 a ton.

A neighbor once told me that his brother in law
had a farm in Southern Illinois that had coal
on it. In the fall he would go out each day,
with pick and shovel, and Ford tractor and
trailer, and dig a trailer load. In a few weeks he had enough stockpiled to last the winter.

So far, we got pea coal, rice coal and nut coal. You guys burning it, or just eating it? "But seriously, folks"- I think coal is one of the more overlooked heating sources. Little old lady I know burns coal- has a Stokermatic stove, and it works well. She can't carry the coal scuttle full anymore, so when she needs coal carried in, she sets the empty coal scuttle in the middle of the driveway, and generally within an hour or so, either her son or a passing neighbor sees it, comes in and fills the stove for her, and takes out the klinkers as well. Another reason I treasure living in the country.

Seeing some ads on TV lately about improving coal technology, and that it may be our energy saviour in the future.
