I would tend to go right in with straight alfalfa.
Tried a mix with clover in it, within 2 yrs the clover took over, and was a complete pain to get dry enough to bale.
On light soil, going with a grass mix usually gives you a good 1st cutting, but nothing after that if you don`t get good moisture. With alfalfa, if you fertilize a little you should still get more than one cutting. As the stand gets older seems like it becomes a grass mix anyway..
As far as forage, I don`t know if there`s a sorghum, or millet that would do the trick or not.
