I have some smaller feilds,5acres or less each. That I am thinking of seeding hay in for baling to get these cows/calves through the months. What is the best mix for beef cows? It is lighter ground. Will be bales as rounds. Also, is there a short season balable forage that I could plant right after the oats and rye has been harvested and baled off? I know it is a dry time of the year to get germination but is there anything. I want to buy, grow, harvest as much forage as possible for my quickly growing herd, dont wanna get caught short of hay, getting real tight right now, still need to finish fencing to get the ol gals out in the grass. Really sick of feeding small squares, they do not waste much at least!

We use 90/10 alfalfa/timothy. Makes really nice hay when done properly. It works well for balage too.

Hey Dave, we're going to be drilling in an alfalfa/timothy blend up here in existing grass hay. I can't tell you the ratio or rate. Heck, I don't even know if I can get it drilled since someone seems to have hidden all the no-till drills in this part of the state.

If you have the moisture you can plant oats in August and get a hay crop. I think dad said to plant 3 bu per ac. Millet might work too. Probably better talk to somebody in your area cuz what works good one place don't work wort a fiz someplace else. I can't grow oats here to amount to a darn. Just too hot and dry.

Forage sorghums or sudangrass hybrids can be planted in the middle of the summer and hay and grazed. Get sudangrass if you want to try to bale it, but need hot weather. I am doing some red clover and tetraploid Italian ryegrass mixed with red clover, and alfalfa, and also birdsfoot trefoil, all blends provide good yields and high protein hay for brood cows. I am putting in about 15 acres of Sudex about the begining of June for grazing when we hit the mid summer slump of grasses here in Southern Michigan.

If those small fields are surrounded by trees the crop will have a hard time curing. Alfalfa would be my choice. Intermediate wheat grass is ok too.

Im trying to think northern latitudes here. My experience in your part of the northern US is very limited so take this for what it is. I'd not be too inclined to try the forage sorghums, they are warm season grasses. Following rye, a mixture of soybeans and millet would make a good annual hay crop. Its one I've used here with good success.

For perennial forage, and alfalfa timothy blend strikes me as the perfect combination. High yields of first cutting and high quality. Later cuttings would be more alfalfa and could be square baled for either cash hay sales or to use as a quality booster in bad weather or for a sick cow.

If it were me I would plant a mix with grass that will thicken in the stand. When I had beef I noticed they didn't care for the alfalfa stems and prefered grass hay. Some here have had different experience I guess.

Being in MN., I would go with straight Alfalfa as after it is established, you can get two and possibly three cuttings off of it. I'm in NE Iowa and that is what most of them do here. To get three cuttings, depends on weather....JB

I would tend to go right in with straight alfalfa.

Tried a mix with clover in it, within 2 yrs the clover took over, and was a complete pain to get dry enough to bale.

On light soil, going with a grass mix usually gives you a good 1st cutting, but nothing after that if you don`t get good moisture. With alfalfa, if you fertilize a little you should still get more than one cutting. As the stand gets older seems like it becomes a grass mix anyway..

As far as forage, I don`t know if there`s a sorghum, or millet that would do the trick or not.
