I'm not sure how your Toyota works but my Toyosha AC5020 has a resistor spring that is supposed to glow but doesn't for whatever reason probably because it is rusted from sitting outside all the time I can put my hand over the opening to see it and you can feel the heat but no glow its just a small heating element. I just hold it like the book says for 30 seconds and it starts right up if I don't you have to crank on it for awhile. I don't think you can hold it too long it doesn't seem to matter more heat is better IMHO.
