is it a light sound or heavy? if its light and louder on top of the motor rather than under the car, its probably the cam, back then 305's were notorious for having the cam lobes wear, the knock is pushrods and rockerarms, i had to replace 2 cams on 2 diferent pickups i had in the 80's. the 350 cam will slip right in, problem solved, be sure to replace lifters and pushrods if you have high milage youll need to replace the cam bearings you can rent the cam bearing tool , if your mechanicaly inclined at all its a weekend job top to bottom, if your good its a 4 to 8 hour job
