I have a 1987 Camaro that has gradually developed a engine knock. The engine oil pressure is still at about 40 percent. It still has alot of power and the oil level is good in it. It sounds like its on the right side of the motor. Any ideas? Any tricks? It has a 305 in it. Thankyou

Sometimes a crack in the flexwheel can sound like a rod knock.
Easy to check.
Run engine
Shut off ignition.
Turn ignition a split second before the engine stops rotating.(The engine will restart)
Do this a few times.
If in knocks that split second that you turn the ignition back on then it will be the flex plate.

Go under the trans and remove inspection plate and rotate the converter and carefully look at the 3 conection points.

Isn't the air pump on the right side of that engine? Sometimes they develop a he!! of a knock also. disconnect the air pump belt and see if the noise goes away.

Otherwise, start racing for pinks with it, and hope you win someone else's stuff. If you lose it, you won't feel as bad since it was knockin' anyway

You may have a rod bearing that's worn. Drain the oil and look for metal particles. Hal

is it a light sound or heavy? if its light and louder on top of the motor rather than under the car, its probably the cam, back then 305's were notorious for having the cam lobes wear, the knock is pushrods and rockerarms, i had to replace 2 cams on 2 diferent pickups i had in the 80's. the 350 cam will slip right in, problem solved, be sure to replace lifters and pushrods if you have high milage youll need to replace the cam bearings you can rent the cam bearing tool , if your mechanicaly inclined at all its a weekend job top to bottom, if your good its a 4 to 8 hour job

Run it until it blows up and then junk it.

An internal knock is a bad thing regardless of whom makes it, tractor, automobile, lawn mower. If it has an internal knock, suggesting crank or rod, you have problems and there are no short cuts. If you keep running it, you're going to damage even more components than already are. Metal chips end up being sucked up by the oil pump, block oil passages, and even more damage occurs to other parts of the engine. You have to fix it, or replace it. Sorry, and good luck.

Mark

Sure it's not a rocker arm/lifter tick? A knock from lower end wouldn't be able to be heard from one side or the other.

A bent pushrod could cause it or a worn lobe on cam.Pull the rocker cover off and take a looksie.

Is a spark plug broken or loose???
