We picked up a tractor that had been sitting for several years. At the time, it was a hard starter and smoked a little. There was a little oil in the breather tube. After several tanks of fresh fuel, and some additive in the oil to clean the gunk, its easy to start, doesn't blow oil at all, and there is no smoke at all. My guess is that your rings are just stuck from sitting. The leaks are not as easy. They probably lost their ability to seal from sitting in one place for years.
