I have just aquired my fathers 1979 David Brown. (He had bought it new back then) It hadn't been started for 2 years. I changed the oil and oil filter initially. Oil in engine had water in it, but I'm putting this down to rain water going down the exhust pipe over the last 2 years out in the open. After a few attempts I managed to jump start it by rolling it down a hill. Engine is ticking over nicely, but has a few oil leaks here and there. I've never restored a tractor before and would like to restore it to it's former glory. Trouble is..... I've never restored a tractor before and my knowlwdge of engines is limited. Where do I start?? I suspect engine needs to be reconditioned. Is it hard to get parts. Paintwork is poor... rust here and there. Where do I start on this?? Any help greatly appreciated. Regards.

It's leaking a lot of oil down the breeder pipe. Would this mean the rings need to be done in the engine.

We picked up a tractor that had been sitting for several years. At the time, it was a hard starter and smoked a little. There was a little oil in the breather tube. After several tanks of fresh fuel, and some additive in the oil to clean the gunk, its easy to start, doesn't blow oil at all, and there is no smoke at all. My guess is that your rings are just stuck from sitting. The leaks are not as easy. They probably lost their ability to seal from sitting in one place for years.

I have a DB 885, and have found a bunch of the guys on the Case board to be of invaluable help. Check it out.

If engine starts good and sounds like it is running on all cylinder, I would add a good fuel conditioner and leave it alone. Fix the oil leaks. should be able to get parts at CaseIH dealer. Neil
