If ya think a cougar in a populated area is scary...a couple months back there was a story in the Omaha NE paper of a much meaner critter that was dispached in pretty much the same method, with the boys in blue unloading on the fearsome beast....
Seems a cattle truck had overturned on the freeway and there was a steer loose, so...target practice time!
Just this week there was a story in the North Platte NE paper about a cow that had gotten loose from the sale barn and was on the courthouse lawn of all places....no big deal, it was simply roped from horseback and put back where it belonged...guess there's a shortage of ropers in Omaha?
Back to the cougar though, for those thinking it didn't HAVE to be killed....what were the other alternatives??? Marlin Perkins has retired, and anyway a tranquilizer dart would just make the thing mad, not a good idea in a populated area for sure! Maybe a more humane plan would have been a rubber mouse on the end of a long string to lure kitty out of town and safely back to the woods? :)
