well looks like chicago's finest saved the city. shot this poor critter 18 times. gee wizz, it was aggressive. hmmm they chased the poor cat, shot at it numerous times and missed. then they cornered it again, and unloaded 18 rounds in it. rumor is, it came from WISCONSIN!!!. i dunno, this kinda bugs me, poor cat wandered in to a populated area, so ya gotta shoot it. they are extremely rare here, but they have been around for quite a while. animal control showed up after they shot it, guess they were too busy. heres a link to the news story.

I agree that 18 rounds is actually pretty realistic for a cougar. We have a Browning 9mm, and it took 5 or 6 shots just to kill a skunk, even at close range. Not the most effective weapon, for sure.

I put down a couple of obnoxious stray dogs last summer with a 9mm automatic. It took five rounds for one and six for the other. And I was shooting directly into vital organs and the head. I was in the middle of it before I realized I should have grabbed my .45 or .44 Mag. I wasn't too proud of the whole scene. Not because I put down the dogs, but because I didn't use a more effective weapon.

That's why I question the effectiveness of the 9mm. When I was discussing it with the County Sheriff a couple of days later, the Sheriff said if I could take out a couple of stray dogs with a 9mm, he ought to make me a Reserve Deputy. He, himself, is aware of the limitations of the 9mm, but that's what they give the LEO's nowadays.

So, I'd conclude 18 rounds with a 9mm on a mountain lion is probably about right.

I"ll second that. My opinion is that any self defense handgun needs to begin with a "4", though I wouldn"t complain about a .357 mag.

Of course, there"s an exception to every rule. For example, there"s a news story today about a lady getting it between the eyes with a .44 and being treated/released from the emergency room. Bullets do funny things sometimes, plus I"ve been told that there are some extremely hard-headed women...

a wild animal loose in a city is not half as dangerous as gangs or drug dealers. 18 shots? maybe them shooters ought take a course at the gun range before they are let out on the streets.

I agree 18 shots, and they likely missed a few, too bad they cant practice shoot on Drug dealers.

I wonder if you would talk the same way if that cat had taken out a two or three year old child playing in a back yard or park. They are predators and will kill an adult (as they have done in Cal. and other states) if they are hungry.-Bill

i agree with you Bill, cougar is a top predator and will take a human life. the problem i have with this whole senario is there have been sightings of this cat for the past several months, the powers that be just poo-poohed all the people that saw it, said there are no cougars in illinois. from the locations of the sightings, it was pretty obvious the cat was moving in the general direction toward the city. nothing was done until the cat was cornered near wrigley field. then they blew it up in a hail of gunfire that would make al capone smile. the cat was shot in a gangway, a narrow alley between two buildings, cops on either end. if they needed to put the animal down, have somebody that can shoot put it down humanely, one shot.

My guess is that they ran out of bullets. That's probably why they shot it 18 times. Better than the guy in Florida they shot 68 times.

One shot, one kill: Not exactly. Think someone needs to go back to the pistol range with a target in the outline of a cougar?

Their biggest mistake was using a 9mm. There's no way you're going to take out a mountain lion with one shot from a 9mm.

That's why the good old .45 automatic is still the handgun of choice in Iraq. Feedback I get from Marines over there is if you shoot someone with a standard issue 9mm, all you do is pi$$ him off. Shoot him with a .45 and he's down.

Hollow point bullet might have worked for that cat, one shot in the head might have done the trick.

If it would just stand there cornered by several cops and let them shoot it, maybe.

I bet the cops were trying to contain it, then thing tried to do something to get out, and the cops let it rip until the thing quit moving. I haven't been around a couger, but if you corner a wild house cat it will rush you, don't see why a couger would be any different. Not mention for the way a mad little housecat can tear you up, I don't think I would hold anything back on a couger once I started. I have seen animals go down and get back up madder than ever and that is one critter I would rather er on the side of caution of staying down.

If ya think a cougar in a populated area is scary...a couple months back there was a story in the Omaha NE paper of a much meaner critter that was dispached in pretty much the same method, with the boys in blue unloading on the fearsome beast....

Seems a cattle truck had overturned on the freeway and there was a steer loose, so...target practice time!

Just this week there was a story in the North Platte NE paper about a cow that had gotten loose from the sale barn and was on the courthouse lawn of all places....no big deal, it was simply roped from horseback and put back where it belonged...guess there's a shortage of ropers in Omaha?

Back to the cougar though, for those thinking it didn't HAVE to be killed....what were the other alternatives??? Marlin Perkins has retired, and anyway a tranquilizer dart would just make the thing mad, not a good idea in a populated area for sure! Maybe a more humane plan would have been a rubber mouse on the end of a long string to lure kitty out of town and safely back to the woods? :)

Had the fire fight captured on TV news. Seemed like each officer took a turn firing through the iron fence. Chi town top cop FBI type got on the news the next day and said it lunged at an officer. A cat of this type will move 30 miles a day. My guess the cat moved into the line of fire.

I agree that is no little putty cat it had to go. I would bury one in my back 40 without hesitation if I had seen one. I do not care to defend the cops but whey they shoot a 9mm its going to take more than one shot to kill a lively animal like that. 18 does have me scratching my head but its dead.

The issues here are that it's not good for cougars to be in Chicago nor is it good for the people of Chicago for cougars to be in Chicago. It ended the way it had to end for the cougar.

Now--all the people who say either the cougar shouldn't have been shot 18 times and/or that it didn't need to be shot at all would be the first ones to raise a hue and cry if the cougar had attacked or injured people. Period!

I have to admit shooting it 18 times is sad, but what were the alternatives other than shooting it?

I believe that it was 1997 or 1998 that the state of Utah had a special season on cougars. When 600 had been killed, the season ended.

Too many people associate these animals with their house cat, I sure wouldn't want one hanging around my back yard!

South Dakota has a season each fall. Not sure how many are "harvested" but it ends when so many females are taken. Seems there are to many in the Black Hills so they needed to trim them out.

Grrr.

Number one, they didn't need to kill it.

Number 2, if it was justifiable to kill it, any number of us gun-owning and experienced citizens could've dispatched that animal with a single and humane shot from a safe distance. Makes you wonder how safe folks are when a whole team of "trained" police use 18 rounds to kill something.

Are you sure they weren't just taking advantage of the situation to fire their gun?

I get to fire my gun hehe, and it's not human haha, no investigation priceless.

It just kills me when the people of this area complain about wildlife. The first thing anybody here does when they build a house is plant a gob of trees around it. They should really realize that we are living in a man made forest. It's "home" to the wild critters!
That cougar was "target practice" for the Chicago guys for sure. I wonder who gets the mount?
