oil controversy

I've been sifting the other posts, and I didn't see anybody say this yet: I have been told by several mechanics that an engine that has always been given non-detergent oil should NOT be given detergent oil unless it has been thouroughly cleaned out at overhaul. Reason: engine running for decades w/non detergent oil get an accumulation of crud on the surfaces of the lubrication system. Not enough to plug it up, but it is there. Introduce detergent to that, and all the crud breaks loose and starts going through the system, which CAN lead to plugging. This gunk may also have been what was keeping a bad gasket sealed up, where the detergent oil is now finding its way through. Take it for what it's worth . . . .
