I started paying my SS taxes at the age of 12 and continued the rest of my life. Now I am starting to get some of MY money back, course I get to pay more taxes on MY already earned money that I didn"t receive, since I have additional income.
On those on SS without additional income over the minimum number, surely there is a stipulation in the package as to being able to receive it when you are not required to file a 1040 under the IRS code. I would surely check it out. Maybe you just file one this year just to qualify even though you will just be going through the motions.
I have already received my notice indicating what you said about having to file this year. Interesting that it came from the IRS. I think I like that.....using taxpayers (including retired taxpayers on SS) as a basis for the handout. Gives it some accountability as to who deserves it...if you get the gist.
Course you know as well as I that it IS income and as such there will be a special line on the 2008 1040 to record it since it isn"t wages.
