When we 1st got maried we had an 85 Ford Escort. Absolutely a plain-Jane no options. Didn"t even have a 5 speed it was only 4. But that thing got 40mpg on the highway. That was with a non-computerized, carburated engine. (note: it was a piece of junk and the motor went up at 86000 miles). Now you can not buy a car without a lot of goodies which all take power and add weight sucking up more gas. Our old mini-van would get 27-29 MPG highway, our new one with the "same" engine/trans is lucky to get 23 highway. I suspect mostly because it has more stuff on it and is heavier.
