In the summer of 1990, was on a job installing 1000 feet of 8" sewer line, in fine sand type soils, one of the utility location guys had a piece of copper ground cable, wire conductor, same as you use to a ground. It had a short 90 deg bend in it, he used that like a pivot and the long end was out, it worked, I saw it, it moved when you were over the line, had no clue about these things, thought it might have something to do with magnetic fields, he also mentioned it works well with him, but may not work with others. Was interesting, never really researched what the deal was with this, but having seen it done, at least for utility location like water main and I believe electrical like phone, cable etc. He also had some kind of electrical detection device too, but always used that cable just the same.
