I agree with most of the other comments; there are worse things you could be doing and you will learn the hard way but at least you are learning something; some guys get sore because they did stuff the hard way when they were just young guys and hate to see you make the same mistakes... they take it personal when you "ignore" their advice near as I can figure...
As far as your question, do you have any stiff wire bristle brushes?? Couple dozen strokes over the area will make the numbers "pop" from the metal. Magic marker in the grooves will help make it more visible if you have bad old eyes like me because you didn"t listen to other advice as well-- :-)
