Serial Number advice

I primed the B today, paint sunday!!
Regardless, i was trying to read the serial number. That plate (near the shifter) is beyond reading. It is covered in rust (but no paint) and i have no clue how to read the serial number. Any ideas??

Lanse is too full of pizz and vinegar! He could fix the tractor up nice without getting it running and use it as a display, possibly at the front of his driveway? But why? The engine might have hope yet but he used up his money on paint already. Dave

I agree with most of the other comments; there are worse things you could be doing and you will learn the hard way but at least you are learning something; some guys get sore because they did stuff the hard way when they were just young guys and hate to see you make the same mistakes... they take it personal when you "ignore" their advice near as I can figure...

As far as your question, do you have any stiff wire bristle brushes?? Couple dozen strokes over the area will make the numbers "pop" from the metal. Magic marker in the grooves will help make it more visible if you have bad old eyes like me because you didn"t listen to other advice as well-- :-)

Lanse, do what you want to do in the order you want to do it in. It's you tractor and not many young guys your age can claim that.I'm very confident that you will learn from it. The next two or three tractors you do in the future will be done with knowledge you have learned from this one.

Personally, I wouldn't even think about buying paint until every nut and bolt is back on the right way and the tractor is running right. But that's on my tractor, not yours. Anything you do with this machine is better than slouchng in a chair with a joint hanging out of your mouth, playing a video game. Jim

Well heck Lanse, if you got your shorts in such a twist over painting this thing it looks like there will be some relief for you Sunday. What color are you going to paint the cylinder walls ?

There is no plate. It is a number that is stamped into the casting. Use paint remover to clear off the paint and rust, to read it. Again- you are into too much of a rush- fix the tractor before painting it. It"s not even running now- you may very well rip it apart after getting it running, to fix all the things that are bad on it- which you will discover after it is running. and parts will get oil stains on it, etc. Whole "nother unnecessary problem to fix. There is a common sense order of doing things. You are not following that. But, ok- those of us who agree will simply not respond to further posts when you want advice.

yeah, yeah. Im just really excited to have the thing, and would like it to look good even if it doesnt run good (or at all) But thanks for the advice, paint stripper would work better, wouldnt it??

when you get the number where you can read it go to town and have it tatooed on your upper arm, if its rare and a short number have it tatooed on your short arm.....
