I've had an '84 ranger, '93 mustang lx and still have a '94 ranger with the 2.3, check the ignition system, open the hood in the dark see if you have a lightning show going on, wires can look good and send spark out all over, saw this once on the '94 ranger, and the wires looked fine, but besides that and fresh plugs, and the coil packs mentioned, not sure of the compression range on these either, but you may want to see of the timing belt jumped a tooth, it can happen and still run I believe. That and the crank sensor are about all I can think of that is related. Not bad little motors, are durable when you take care of them, never had much trouble with any of mine.
