have a problem with a 88 mustang 2.3l 5 spd car. engine has a studder in it when blipping the throttle, also has a loud momentary knock, sounds like pre-ignition ping. motor sounds good after about 12-1500 rpms, holds steady. have checked ignition timing-right on steady, timing belt-right on, fuel pressure 40psi. cylinder leakdown, good. compression, cyl 1-125psi, 2-128 psi, 3-175psi, 4-180 psi. valve train works good, no bad lobes on cam. cyl 3 and 4 have real high cyl pressure. injectors seem to be good, plugs are a little black fuel fouled. plugs are new. problem started driving at low speed. any ideas where else to look??? i'm about ready to pull the head and peek inside... added oil when doing compression test, only came up a few lbs so rings look good. put the snap on scanner on, no error codes either.

Careful, Allen may tell you to use a bottle jack.Must be his favorite tool.Something wrong with 1-2 cyls as compression is very low compared to 3-4.Do a leak down test to find out why low.Maybe valves?

Ya got to watch out for those hany-man or as I call them Hi-lift jacks. They are worth their weight in gold sometimes. The rest of the time they're trying to kill you!

found it!! in reply to glennster, 02-05-2008 05:46:34
went back and re-ran the leakdown. this time got 80%on cyl #1, found the leak at #2 cylinder. pulled the head, found a bad head gasket, blown out between cyl 1 and 2. funny it didnt leak down this much on the first test.

I had that feel when I suggested the leakdown. Cylinders adjacent with low compression for any other reason are rare. JimN

No kidding, so it was none of the above and the gasket, did it overheat or something ? Kind of forgot valves, gasket and compression loss, at least they are not too hard to work on. Supposed to get high miles from these engines.

I've had an '84 ranger, '93 mustang lx and still have a '94 ranger with the 2.3, check the ignition system, open the hood in the dark see if you have a lightning show going on, wires can look good and send spark out all over, saw this once on the '94 ranger, and the wires looked fine, but besides that and fresh plugs, and the coil packs mentioned, not sure of the compression range on these either, but you may want to see of the timing belt jumped a tooth, it can happen and still run I believe. That and the crank sensor are about all I can think of that is related. Not bad little motors, are durable when you take care of them, never had much trouble with any of mine.

Does that motor have dual coil packs and 8 spark plugs? I had an 89 ranger with the 8 plug setup. If it's that motor you might have a coil pack issue.

THe 125 and 128 pressures are way low. They are what one would expect in a farmall A. The 170 range is fine for that engine. Cylinder leak down check would be my first move. JimN

Did you check/replace your plug wires? They can do strange things.

Dunno,

Guess I'd run some top end cleaner thru 'er first. Looks like it is pretty well carboned up.
