We have owned a small hereford (polled) herd for many years without any calving problems. When the market prices seemed to drop on hereford's and good stock became harder to find, we changed breed to Limousin. The Herefords were much more docile and better breeders. Check into other purebred breeds, find out the best for your market. I'm thinking of adding some Branvieh to my Limousin. If you're raising to resell breeding stock, you want to make sure that you are going to offer what people want to buy. Our livestock is all registered but I only register the calves that are quality - the rest go to the salebarn as commercial calves or are sold as "beef". Good Luck. Price is about the same I'd pay for a good Limousin heifer or open young cow.
