I don't believe that I would try what you recommend,but I would however insert a flexible hose into the fuel tank to be repaired and fasten the other end to a car or truck exhaust pipe and let the vehicle run (idel) that way burnt exhaust would be filling in the empty fuel tank,and no chance of explosion because of fuel fumes.
I have repaired fuel tanks in the past and have always used JB weld.. and yes diesel will leak where gasoline will not
