The JD 50/60 gasoline engine was originally + ground, but most common alternators are built to operate with negative ground only, so the tractor is likely converted to - ground. The conversion from + ground to - ground consists of switching the polarity of the battery connections, switching the ammeter connections and switching the coil primary connections. I would leave it - ground. It will match the polarity of 99% of the electrical systems running today. Much less chance of a mistake in connecting booster cables and battery chargers,plus a replacement alternator is an off the shelf - ground unit instead of some oddball + ground unit that no one stocks.
