On J Deere 50/60 Tractors does the +/- ground change if changing over to a alternator from original generator. Were these tractors originally - ground? Thanks in advance for any info on this subject.

Ground is on AC electrical grid distribution and use. And it carries current only under fault conditions. Chassis return on the other hand is used on mobile machines usually with DC power systems. There are alternators built for positive chassis.

My 60 JD when I purchased it was hooked up - ground & it has a generator. I ordered an electrnic ignition for a negative ground. I hooked it up & the tractor started up. It quit after 10-15 seconds. I guess I might have blown the electrnic set up----- Since it was running on -ground & I ordered a - ground set up I dont understand why this didnt seem to work. da..da.

When new it would have been + ground so if your switching to 12 volts you need to be sure to hook it up - ground and also switch the wires on the coil so the - side of the coil goes to the distributor

ALL Two-Cylinder John Deere Tractors are POSITIVE GROUND. Even the New Generation Tractors until John Deere went to alternators in 1969 are positive ground.

The JD 50/60 gasoline engine was originally + ground, but most common alternators are built to operate with negative ground only, so the tractor is likely converted to - ground. The conversion from + ground to - ground consists of switching the polarity of the battery connections, switching the ammeter connections and switching the coil primary connections.
I would leave it - ground. It will match the polarity of 99% of the electrical systems running today. Much less chance of a mistake in connecting booster cables and battery chargers, plus a replacement alternator is an off the shelf - ground unit instead of some oddball + ground unit that no one stocks.

I'm pretty sure they were postive ground. The common alternators demand negative ground and a faster speed than the generators.
