I think you are right, The weight of the battery whick indicates how much lead is in it is about the only true indicator left.The CCA ratings have gone the same way as electric motor HP ratings. rating the motor HP at stall speed where a motor can only run for a few seconds made the numbers useless. My best luck has been with OPTIMA brand spiral cell batteries. They seem to crank very well in the cold. They claim to stand vibration better and last 2or 3 times as long as a conventional battery( Cant prove this as my oldest is 6 years old) They use a jelly electrolite so they dont leak or corrode terminals. EXIDE now sells one that looks exactly like the OPTIMA, dont know if it is a copy or if they bought OPTIMA or what.
