I'm in eastern upstate New York, on the Vermont border. Hay prices are killing me, but I guess it's not as bad as other places. I buy hay from 2 friends who give me a break on the price. I get second cutting alfalfa/timothy/clover small square bales (60 lbs) for $4, he sells them to everyone else for $5. From my other friend I get first cutting mixed grass for $2.50 for each small square, he sells them to everone else for $3, and I get second cutting mixed grass for $3.50 from him, and he sells them to eveyone else for $4.
My wife and I have a goat dairy farm, and we're down to 1/3 of peak production. We'll have to dry off by February, as goats are seasonal milkers, and we won't start freshening until April, but the goats still gotta eat. We also raise fiber sheep, and we won't have fleeces to sell until June, so it's a long, hard, expensive winter.
