I must have lucked up this year. Got three cuttings off one field, 2 off another, got 22 4x4 bales, 140 square, and a pile of loose hay. Added together, I have maybe $5 a roll in round, a dollar a bale in square, and about $25 in loose. Would have had a late cutting after the frost, but my mower tore up, and I had a neighbor that was gonna cut it for me and we'd split the hay, but he was more interested in moving what he had than trying to make a little more hay. Needless to say, I was peeved, now I got to burn that field this spring because of that. Leastwise, I only had a little investment in the crop. About three tons of hen litter to the acre, some fuel, and about a hundred dollars worth of chemical. Pretty decent showing in my opinion.

Here in Arizona we are paying $9 for a 110# bale of Excellent Alfalfa. It is just going to get more expensive with more corn fields popping up!

Here in east Texas I have been selling top quality bermuda hay for $4.00-$4.50 a bale at the barn and the feed stores are charging $7.00 a bale and that hay is local. We have had a bumper crop of hay this year but next year we will probably be back to our usual drought. With the high cost of fertilize and equipment expense hay has to produce a lot of bales per acre to make any thing at selling hay at $4.00 a bale. So watch out for cheaper hay that they say is fertilized and clean.

Here in West TX I just saw a sign on the side of the road the other day that was advertising 1st cutting alfalfa for $6.00 a bale (I think it was 60 lb bale). Glad I quit playing with horses that's a lot more than I have to spend on gas for my old JD B in a parade now and then.

I know I got a darn good deal, but I just happend to bump into a fellow yesterday that wanted to get his shed emptied out of small square bales. About 50 lbs each. Nice grass hay baled with no rain. He asked If I would take 100 at $2.00 a bale. We started loading my trailer very shortly there after!
Otherwise, I sold 15 of my 5x5 canary hay bales for $30 dollars a bale on the farm, and my better hay as high for $75 a bale, but that was delivered 90 miles, and I haul 12 at a time.

We had lunch today with a cattle buyer and he raises some animals on his own. He picked up 5 bales at the local farm outlet store on Friday and they were 2 string 70lb mixed alfalfa and orchard grass. The bill was 15 dollars per bale, yes 15. Hay is very scarce and highest prices in history here in Washington. Migraine

I'm in eastern upstate New York, on the Vermont border. Hay prices are killing me, but I guess it's not as bad as other places. I buy hay from 2 friends who give me a break on the price. I get second cutting alfalfa/timothy/clover small square bales (60 lbs) for $4, he sells them to everyone else for $5. From my other friend I get first cutting mixed grass for $2.50 for each small square, he sells them to everone else for $3, and I get second cutting mixed grass for $3.50 from him, and he sells them to eveyone else for $4.

My wife and I have a goat dairy farm, and we're down to 1/3 of peak production. We'll have to dry off by February, as goats are seasonal milkers, and we won't start freshening until April, but the goats still gotta eat. We also raise fiber sheep, and we won't have fleeces to sell until June, so it's a long, hard, expensive winter.

Kentucky and Tennessee, if added together, are second only to Texas in cow numbers. That doesnt even consider the number of horses, sheep, llamas, and everything else eating hay. Both had extreme drought this year following a freeze that reduced first cutting by more than half. With high fuel prices its next to impossible to bring hay in as supplies are tight within 500 miles.

Going rate is 50-120 per round bale. Doesnt matter what the round bale is, its how desperate the guy wanting it is. I had a wagon load I bought down by the road asking 65 a roll for some weedy late cut 4x5's. One guy stopped and said that was mighty high and he'd call back. Before he pulled out the next guy pulled in and paid cash on the spot. Been that way all winter. Squares 6-10, when you can get them. Been a guy coming into the Kroger parking lot with a semi load out of Illinois, getting 6.00 cash on the spot and he never sits more than 3 hrs.

Added together with 1207 head in KY and 1153 head in TN would make 2360 head (times 1000 head) or behind Texas but slightly ahead of Missouri in total cow numbers. Worst part is, the hay shortage is even worse down south, particularly in Alabama and Georgia. In a normal year they get a lot of hay trucked in out of TN, but not this year.

State rankings for beef cows, numbers expressed times 1000.

1. Texas 5,303 2. Missouri 2,146 3. Oklahoma 2,000 4. Nebraska 1,940 5. South Dakota 1,669 6. Kansas 1,500 7. Montana 1,382
8. Kentucky 1,207
9. Tennessee 1,153

In my area hay is high as heck. First cutting was about 30% to 40% less then normal, and very very few folks got a second cutting.

Rolls of hay doesnt matter whether they are 4x4 or 6x6 starting price is $45 to $50 per roll and goes higher. Square bales good luck finding any less then 6.50 a bale. If you want it delivered then its even higher. This for all types and mixes of hay. Now you can find Trash hay for less.

Talked to a guy last week who sold 100 5x5 rolls of orchard grass that had been kept outside for 3 years for $45/roll.

I just sold 50 barn kept 4x4 rolls of orchard grass and timothy hay for $55 to one of the local horse folks.

There was a big add in the local paper back in December with local horse folks complaining about the outrages prices of hay. One guy who was interviewd said it was highway robbery and there was no sense in farmers charging such ridiculous prices for hay.

Mid Michigan,$5-5.50 for square first cutting,up to 60 for rounds...if you can find it. Baling corn stalks was pretty popular this year.

I went to the Lebanon auction on Thursday the prices were so low that it wasn't worth hauling the cows out there. Also it was the smallest auction i have seen in years.
On the way out and back we saw barns full to the top with Hay and tons of it piled outside and covered with tarps. We had a very good years out here in NW Oregon. Hope its good next year to.

Local horse hay is non-existant in Southside Virginia. There was no second cutting for grass. Whatever was cut in May was about all there was. $200 per ton is a bargain this year.
Imported hay (PA & NY) is high due to fuel costs and opportunists. Your $4 hay is $6 here by the tractor trailer load, grass/alfafa is even more.
