Yep you have the placement of the sending unit sort of right. On my truck I have a flat bed so its right out in the open. The old tank started to leak where the back mount sits under the tank. I get rocks etc. off the front and rear tires in that area and thats why I was thinking about the inner tube to keep the rocks from hitting the tank and putting hole in it. I pull tractors out of places off and on that I have to use the 4 wheel drive and do that throws rocks at time and causes problems with stuff building up on the tank which is also right out in the open
