I'm in Minnesota, things have changed a little, haven't they? More trains seem to go to the West; we got an large hog feed mill many years ago, and surrounded by ethanol plants now. Like you say, used to be 2 coop elevators was the only real game in the area, and they were the same, 35-50 cents under.....
The ethanol plants are all closed coops - buy only from members, but they still put some drive into the corn market, as they take a lot of corn off the table, the rest of us are left to supply the feeders & shipping. One coop aligned itself with the ethanol plant, the other coop got in better rail facilities.
So far the rail is paying better most of the time. Can see a nickel to 15 cents difference, if they need to fill 100 cars.
