I remember never seeing any locally 70's mid 80's, but at some point thereafter, the beaver helped flood a 20 acre marsh area here, was just a creek and soft ground, now a pond over 6 feet deep. They migrate from the north and several thousand stay in this area, sometimes that entire pond is full, they'll stay until it ices over, then leave. The snow geese used to arrive in October, but they have not been by yet, and in northern NY a few weeks ago, the waterfowl hunting was not good at all, not cold enough to start the migration thing or who knows what, 2 friends were shut out up there by lake champlain.
In the spring, we get local ones now and they are the real problems like most places they occupy, can't use the fields surrounding the water, they eat everything you plant. I'm going to have a war with them when I re-plant a strip of clover this spring.
Take the breast meat off, they're not bad on the grill, some are tougher than others.
