The heat involved in the welding help you a bunch. It may would help to have someone hold the nut for you and get the rod right down in the center of the nut and try to get a good arc and good penetration at the very first, then like Jim says fill the nut up with weld, then let it cool some. Use a box end wrench so you can see what is happening, the work it back and forth real easy.
If you can see it move a little then hit it with some liquid wrench.
