I have had a plastic one for my dog for four years now with no problem. If I remember the temp is controled with a thermostat that only heats when it gets to freezing, and only warms to just above freezing. Clean it up and put it away in the spring, and dig it back out in the fall. Greatist thing since sliced bread.
