It's called heat pipe theory. You sink a pipe below frost line where gound temperatures are stable and the water will thermosphion with-in the heat pipe keeping the surface free of ice.
Another method is covering one end of the troff with a clear hard plastic then vertical down to just off the bottom. Seal the top edges of the plastic to the tank edge. The sun will solar heat the water and thermosphion the water thru out the tank. Draw back here is it's very easy to over heat the water during the summer time.
