Looks perfect except one thing. I"d put some removable bars over the waterer. Those bawlin calves will get stuck and hurt trying to get through to an adjoining pen. This year I had one swim underwater in a stock tank to get out. All the others watched and did it too. If I hadn"t seen it with my own eyes I would have never believed it.

Keith do you have access to oval rail in the US. It is the standard here in Australia for cattle rail. This link shows you pictures.

Cheers

Mitch

It is not painted as it is galvanised. Its benefit are large surface area butting up against upright posts and which gives it a great deal of strength and oval x section seems stronger than round. Maybe you guys dont get feral cattle, they are pretty well the norm here in Northern Australia with high Brahman content cattle on a lot of places. You need big rails.

You have a very devoted wife Keith.

Cheers

Mitch

I purchase the continuous panels that are 20' that slip together on the ends. They cost me $45 per 20 foot section at a sale. The top rail is reject 2 inch by 1/4 wall that I got locally, it cost around 15 cents per pound. The corners come locally from a welder, its from a salvage building, cost less than 20 bucks for 11 footers that are 5" by 5". For the most part I scrounged around for stuff. The top rail is turned on edge and is very strong this way and looks good.
What place in St Joe?
This photo is my 17 year old son helping.

That's some pretty good craftsmanship. Turning the tubing on edge and fitting it all together takes a lot more work than a lot of people realize. Nice job. The paint looks good as well. Dave

If I knew how to convert the sound of me whistling into text, that's what I'd type. Looks great.

Looks to be the same waterer I have. If so, it is a Mirafount brand. It is heated by ground heat. There is a vertical tube about 16" in diameter that runs down into the ground about 8ft. Works good down to about -10F. After that I made my own electric heater that I plug in or else it will freeze up.

Hi Jim,

It's called heat pipe theory. You sink a pipe below frost line where gound temperatures are stable and the water will thermosphion with-in the heat pipe keeping the surface free of ice.

Another method is covering one end of the troff with a clear hard plastic then vertical down to just off the bottom. Seal the top edges of the plastic to the tank edge. The sun will solar heat the water and thermosphion the water thru out the tank. Draw back here is it's very easy to over heat the water during the summer time.

Thanks T Bone - I have a neighbour who uses a ground loop heat pump for his house, however, this is the first time I've seen something similar for a waterbowl. Very interesting!!

Friends painted a large ropin arena like that with a paint mitten. You put it on, dip your hand in the bucket, then grab the pipe and go as far as ya can...
