Here is my take and i agree its all out of order. Fuel prices affect everything (The gas pump is 50% of whats wrong today.) The dollar is weak last i knew it is almost equal to the canadian dollar (I remember when one us was 2 canadian) Taxes, enviomental laws and osha standards add to the bottom line. The intrest rates/credit and (housing issues) are not helping any Medical and retirement issues are also kicking in big time. There is some thought that if it continues it will be once again possible to manufacture in the us again. Global competition for some materials (supply demAND) is also driving up prices.
